VON JOHIN Live - Friday 1st May- 5pm slt (1am irish time)

Live acoustic flatpicking and fingerstyle country blues styles with songs from roots blues artist like Howlin' Wolf, Rev Gary Davis, Muddy Waters, BB King, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Hot Tuna, Willie Dixon and more, streaming from Von Johin's Blue Note Studio in Nashville, TN.

Von Johin's real life persona has performed and recorded with members of Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna, Merl Saunders, Grateful Dead, Fleetwood Mac and a host of other aging hippy friends in his career as a guitarist, songwriter, artist and sideman.

Blues musician and vocalist Von Johin hails from Nashville, TN and grew up in the good ol' southern US of A playin' juke joints all across the chitlin' circuit. An ardent follower of the greats from the world of blues music, Von Johin delivers power shows several times each week live in Second Life at blues clubs, festivals and other fun venues where they loves the blues and what not.

He's notorious for playin' as long as the peoples demand it, sometimes as long as three hours, but usually around two hours. With his trusty Gibson SJ200 in the real and virtual world, plus the Epiphone EF500RA and Valve Jr rig that he endorses from Epiphone, Von broadcasts each show live from his Blues Note Studio on the outskirts of Nashville, TN soon after he's done filled up on some smoked pig, cornbread, collard greens and all the fixins with a tall glass of Co-cola or some sweet honey nectar of the gods iced sweat tea to wash it down and cool his sweatin' from pickin' a mess or two. Mmmm, mmm. Mighty good stuff, ya'll.

Von playing Live at Buddy's Bar on the Link below..

Von done got signed in the summer of 2008 to Reality Records, from Reality Entertainment's group of book, film and record labels, and got put smack dab in the middle of a motley crew of folks like Krokus, KC & the Sunshine Band, even Marcy Playground. Now don't that beat all??

Look for Von the Revelator in 2009 on iTunes and other fine retail sites, from Reality Entertainment, and ya'll visit VonJohin.com to find out what he's a playin' next. Ain’t nothing else like him nowhere on second life, so tune in, sit back and turn on your love-light every week at johin’s blue note club, or catch special appearances as announced!

FORSYTHE WHITFIELD Live @ Buddy's bar Sun 26th April 2pm slt (10pm Irish time)

We Welcome Back the great Roots & Blues artist Forsythe Whitfield, from Canada back to the Buddy's bar stage.

Forsythe has been playing the blues for about 10 years now and is hooked on slide guitar and ukulele. He finds almost no division between the blues and modern roots music. He believes in the song and in delivering an honest performance. Expect a mix of slide blues guitar, hot instrumentals and ukulele tunes mixed with a wry sense of humor and a keen observational mind.

Forsythe has toured Canada extensively. He explains that Second Life has been instrumental in the growth of his music career in the last year. "Since I've been playing shows here in SL, my online CD sales have increased and there are more folks e-mailing me about my music. I have been preselling my CDs to help fund them for a number of years, and this time most of the subscribers to the CD are residents of SL. Normally to sell CDs an independant artist like me has to spend time on the road. Playing for the people where they live. With SL I play for the people from my home and they meet me in the place we both live, Second Life."

In RL his name is Manitoba Hal Brolund.

Like anyone whose name is a place, Manitoba Hal wears his love for his roots on his sleeve. But those roots aren't just in the prairie soil. Hal's got a songwriter's roots in eerie folk - murder ballads and killer floods - and a player's roots in the deep, dark, fixin' to die blues. This is a man who can sing the word "lonesome" like he means it, and no mistake.

Highlights of Hal’s career include; opening for Kelly Joe Phelps, Mose Scarlett, Fred Eaglesmith and Micheal Jerome Browne, sharing the stage with Dr. John, Colin James, Big Dave McLean, Phil Guy, Ken Hamm, Amos Garrett, Valdy, Tim Williams, Don Ross, Bill Bourne, Lester Quitzau, Washboard Hank, Suzie Vinnick, Danville Dan and Fruitland Jackson.

JeanChristophe Chevalier Live @ Buddy's Bar 25th April 2pm slt (10pm Irish time)

We are delighted to welcome the great guitar player that is JeanChristophe Chevalier to the Buddy's bar stage...

Born in France in 1961, Jean-Christophe comes from a family of musicians. His parents took his name from Romain Rolland's character, a child from a modest family background who becomes a famous pianist.

In his case it's the guitar rather than the piano! He studied music at the University of Rouen and graduated in Musicology. He also studied Composing and Electro-acoustics at the National Music School of Dieppe.

Eclectic at heart, dabbling in everything, he mixes styles in an unlikely cross-breeding: Classical music, Celtic, Blues, Pop, Electro-acoustics... He is in love with the sound, in search of the absolute purity, the crystal simplicity which gives his music a force and a transparency able to transport the soul.

Check out JeanChristophe Chevalier's beautiful guitar playing:

Grace Buford "A.K.A." Cylindrian Rutabaga in Second life Live@Buddy's Bar - Friday 17th April - 2pm slt (10pm irish time)

She was featured in Billboard Magazine’s Jan 19, 2008 Issue under the Indie Music Section along with Hep Shepherd (Jeff Krantz in RL) for her use of new media to market her music.

Because of contacts made in SL Cylindrian has traveled and performed in cities all across the United States and was filmed as a mentor for SL Musician Keiko Takamura during a segment on MTV’s: True Life in March 2008. Known as a pioneer of virtual music, Cylindrian’s performances carry the listener on a journey guided by lyric and melody. Though, she likes to perform various cover songs that have inspired and moved her, she prefers to perform her own original material.

CLICK ON THE LINK BELOW...and see CNN NEWS report on cylindrian playing in second life last week... :)
http://edition.cnn.com/video/#/video/showbiz/2009/04/07/dcl.buford.second.life.cnn?iref=videosearch

The woman behind the avatar, Grace Buford began her musical adventure at the tender age of 4 years old while listening to her older brother practice piano. That was the spark that ignited her desire to make music. Passion, perseverance, and determination have always been present in her music from that early age. Her desire to hone her craft continues even today as she attempts to impart some of that same ethic on her music students.
“Southern pine forests, winding rivers, and muddy bare feet are luxuries to Atlanta, GA. native Grace Buford.

Life's experiences, be they good or bad, are the fuel and passion that underpin Grace's unique style of songwriting and it shows. Her music engages the heart and mind of her audience, there is feeling and the feeling is shared. From a rhythmic acoustic song about facing negative thoughts in a battle for the mind to a flowing, ethereal keyboard that exposes the vulnerability of facing change, Grace's music and live performances are an emotional ride that will leave you spellbound and wanting more.

As with those shining lights of previous generations of folk/acoustic rock acts, Grace's influences are broad, she is open-minded, curious and not a believer in musical boundaries defined by genres Grace creates what she feels.

Of course to truly experience Grace the best way is to catch her live show, a performer that holds nothing back in terms of energy and is happiest when sharing. There's no pretense or falsehoods, no trickery or gimmicks, be it an intimate venue or a hall you are guaranteed the bare-footed energetic dynamo that is Grace Buford, a voyage of laughter, of tears and every emotion in between is shared openly with her audience and it will leave you wanting for more."

CLICK THE LINK BELOW TO LISTEN TO SOME OF GRACE'S SONGS

http://reverbnation.com/cylindrian

Cylindrian aims to use her skills at social networking, marketing, and music to bring the real world to the virtual and the virtual to the real world in a beautiful fusion of art, music, and technology; in her mind it reflects the proper use of Second Life(tm).

RUSSELL EPONYM Live@Buddy's Bar - Friday 17th April -3pm slt (11pm irish time)

Russell Eponym (Russell Taylor Ashby) is a British folk singer currently resident in the US. He was one of the first live musicians in Second L ife and has performed in most of the major venues. Primarily influenced by the British and European folk tradition, Russell has played in bands and ensembles covering many musical genres and as a solo artist and street singer in London, Paris and Vienna.

As a musician, Russell's major influences include Davy Graham, Bert Jansch and John Renbourne. It is not surprising, therefore, that he is a versatile and accomplished guitarist. His unique sound is characterized by his meticulous fingerpicking style, his soft lulling voice and charming British stage presence. Russell also plays mandolin, banjo and harmonica, though it is as a guitar player that he has become so well known and popular in Second Life.

Russell is also a songwriter and poet and his many fine compositions have become regularly requested at his performances. His songs have an enchanting, lyrical quality and musical flow which have been likened to the sounds of 'summer mountain streams'. His repertoire also contains many songs by other writers such as Donovan, Dylan and Knopfler, but Russell always manages to recreate something in his inimitable style.

Russell also enjoys close contact with his audiences and will often take a few minutes to tell a story or to explain the meanings in a song. He is always articulate and always tasteful in his choice of words.

Some things which have been said about Russell Eponym's performances::

"One of the most intimate live music experiences to be found in SL" (Sternberg)

"Russell Eponym, gentleman guitarist, romantic squire and songsmith.........Russell is an accomplished guitarist as well as a superb harmonica player - his finger picking is of the highest calibre and his eloquent vocal style, reminisent of the finest British thespians of the West End Theatre District, is rich and engaging- whether he is singing one of his original compositions, or any of his superbly selected covers. Russell shares his vast knowledge and joy in each song he presents with his audience, demonstrating his rare ability to make each audience member a part of his personal musical journey" (Metaverse)

"We guarantee that you will be musically embraced with his talent, warmth, and his extraordinary passion for music and musical stories" (Metaverse).

"Russell will put you under a spell with his soft, beautiful voice, singing his own songs. I swear you can see the stress of the day roll right off you. This man has that calming effect and leaves you feeling like a new person" (Paradise Defined)

"Russell Eponym, with that British accent, beautiful guitar style all his own, lovely harmonica interspersed, topped off with a voice that rings through straight to your heart and soul" (Cuddlers Cove)

"His individual fingerpicking style, mellow vocals and a surprising dash of harmonica. Russell's unique sound and his versatile and accomplished guitar playing and his ability with mandolin, banjo and harmonica create a gig that you simply don't want to miss" (Cuddlers Cove).

RUSSELL EPONYM Live@Buddy's Bar - Saturday 4th April -3pm slt (11pm irish time)

SENJATA WITT Live@Buddy's Bar - Saturday 4th April - 4pm slt(midnight irish time)

Senjata (pronounced Sen-YAH-tah) Witt performs heavily Celtic and folk influenced "roots blues", interwoven with American, British, and Celtic folk musics, bluegrass, jazz, and just about anything else she can wrap in her unique acoustic style.

The Bastard daughter of a gypsy piano tuner, Sen's life was steeped in music from the moment she drew breath, her father's tastes strictly classical, while her mother influenced her with a colorful pallet of jazz, rock, blues, folk, and assorted cultural and ethnic sounds. At the tender age of 5 she was given a tiny classical guitar, and a few lessons, which she enjoyed, but the gypsy lifestyle made it impossible to maintain. With her father's work, there were pianos in her world almost constantly, and she learned their construction and how to repair their complex inner workings, from filing hammers to replacing fragile bridal tapes, she never quite took to the instrument, her mother's wilder infulences drawing her steadily even then to the guitar. At 12, she was given her first electric, along with a small amplifier, and a few more lessons, which she readily devoured, but it wasn't until a few years later, when a friend of the family gave her his cherished steel string folk guitar, that she really began to find her own way, almost instantly taking to the streets of Seattle as a busker, where she found a whole lifestyle, and a place she truly felt was home.

In 2005, returning from performing at a medieval fair in British Columbia, She and her companion were devastated by a spontaneous car fire, and all of her instruments were lost. Although an outpouring of generous help from friends and community allowed her to "replace" her instruments, the wounds ran deep, and Senjata's will to play was nearly crushed. It wasn't until she stumbled upon another talented acoustic musician here in Second life in the fall of 2008 that the fog of her grief finally left her, and she took to the strings once again. Her love for the SL live music community runs very deep, in both worlds.

TUKSO OKEY Live@Buddy's Bar- Saturday 4th April - 5pm slt (1am irish time)

Tonight Live at the Buddy's Bar stage we welcome tukso Okey...

Reaching within himself for an appreciation of rich and eclectic musical traditions, Tukso Okey is an original -- a musical genre unto himself. From a small lad, Tukso took in the music the urban world around him, and he has turned it around to give it back to us with richness and a robust passion. He plays solo but, with the assistance of electronics, he builds before us music that soon have us believing that we are listening to a full band with percussion, bass, and rhythm. And then he jams with a raw lead guitar and a hard earthy vocal quality that can reach very different places in each person who listens. Come feel the experience, shake it up, and then spread the word...

THIS IS HOW TUKSO OKEY PLAYS AND STREAMS INTO SECOND LIFE...

MICK MARTIN ..A.K.A."BLINDBOINK PARHAM in Second Life" Live@Buddy's Bar Friday 3rd April - 4pm slt (12 midnight irish time)

Mick Martin's AKA "Blindboink Parham in SL." Fingerpicking style is very unique. That is, it's not just a 1,2 approach, but you never know where the bass is going to go. "This music is so much fun to play on acoustic guitar" says Mick Martin. "It's like having a complete band on one guitar."
As a child in Appalachia Mick Martin grew up listening to the mountain music that was a natural part if his surroundings, which is evident in his unique sound and guitar picking style - it's true "Country Blues".

http://www.mick-martin.com/

On May 9th, 2007 Mick Martin visited world renowned sound
engineer Riccardo Schulz at his Carnegie Mellon University recording studio in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to pick up the final version of his album, Revelator. Mick has teamed up with Riccardo on this project as well as others. Riccardo has recorded and/or produced for variety of record labels
including New Albion, Mode Records, Ocean Records, Norvard, and New World Records, and for artists such as Keith Lockhart and the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Rachael Worby and the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, Laura Opedisano, Aki Takahashi, Eunice Norton, Vivica Genaux, and many others.
Mick Martin is an acoustic guitar solo artist. He plays "Traditional American Folk", music on an acoustic guitar. The styles that Mick plays include "Country Blues" and "Appalachain Folk" music. Mick has shared the stage with Sonny Terry and Brownie Mc Gee, Bill Monroe, Keith Whitley, Tom Rush, Noman Blake, Robin and Linda Williams, Barbra Mandrell, Vince Gill and many others in the music industry over the years. Since then, Mick had taken a hiatus from music and performing to persue a career in education..

Revelator is a solo 'Country Blues' album, and features Mick's masterful reworking of ten classic blues songs by the likes of Son House, Mississippi John Hurt and Blind Willie Mctell.

Style of Guitar: My style of guitar playing is unique as are others. It is a mixture of the Delta and Piedmont blues styles. I began to play the finger-picking guitar style with just my thumb and index finger in the early 70’s. I continued to play this method – without plastic or metal finger picks- until a few years ago. Never having any formal music training or guitar lessons gave me the opportunity to explore my creative abilities and develop my own skills and style. Most of what I had learned came from listening to records and playing with friends who knew a lot more about the guitar than I did at that time. I guess that’s why they call it “Folk Music?” If I had to do it all over again, at some point I should have studied music at an educational institution. It may have opened up another world for me, that is, given me more insight…. maybe. Looking at the big picture though - I enjoyed the unstructured aspect of learning music and how to play what I had a passion for instead of someone else’s idea of what music is or is not. As one of our great western philosophers and thinkers stated a long time ago in his words of wisdom, “I yam what I yam,” - Popeye the Sailorman ..................................................................................................................................... Listening to the “Old Blues Masters” along with some of the great new acoustic guitar players at that time such as, John Fahey, stirred my curiosity. Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Willie McTell, Reverend Gary Davis, Django Reinhardt, Robert Johnson, Doc Watson and many other great and inventive acoustic guitar players influenced my love and desire to learn and develop my style. I had a passion and desire to listen and try to learn what I heard from these people. I became so excited when one of my friends found a recording or a new artist that I had never heard before. I just couldn’t wait to borrow the record - listen to it for hours on end, and then try to learn to play what I heard (or what I thought that I had heard - which was usually the case). Thinking back, maybe “sometimes what I thought that I had heard” was one of the keys that opened the door to the development of my own style. “It’s not played like that!” my friends would say - and they were probably correct based on their musical experiences. Maybe trying to find a different path other than the one that is handed to you is the best way to travel after a certain point in time? It might be different and scary, but at least it will be your choice and can be exciting and stimulating .........................................................................
Click on play to hear mick.. ............................................................. The Music: The music that “The Old Masters” played and recorded is and was not easy to learn or play. There was no music to read, not many concerts to see and not many people to steal the style from at that time. And when I say “stealing,” I mean that there were not many folks eager to show you what they knew or what they learned from “The Old Masters.” The acoustic blues guitar style is played with the thumb keeping the rhythm and timing, along with the finger or fingers playing the melody. Sometimes the bass strings become part of the melody while the first, second and third strings are played in harmony with the bass or just filler/background to the melody. There were not many of the old acoustic blues style guitarists that used harmony notes to the melodies that they were playing, exclusively .........................................................................

............................................................ The History behind the music: The history behind Blues Music is far reaching in my humble opinion. Country Blues was regional, that is, the styles were different depending upon which geographical part of the country one resided. The music can be sad as well as sexy, humorous, raunchy - the miseries of life and the way of ones life. I’ve heard and read all sorts of stories concerning the birth of the blues and its roots. I know that from listening to the music that its roots are spiritual as well as having an underlying tone of double meaning. The music in the big picture has to do with the struggle of ALL people. There are plenty of websites (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues) and books to read if you have an interest in the roots of this music genre. A final few words about who was and is the best player, musician and lyricist: Why waste your time thinking about such crap, get your instrument out and start playing, listening, and practicing the music. Music…It’s not a sporting event! ***A special thank you to Alan Lomax and others who recorded this music and other genres of rural music so that we could All enjoy playing the music, singing the lyrics and reading the history.
